The month approaching winter marks a special place in the calendar at the Stone & Wood brewery, because it’s that time of the year when they get out their stones and heat them in a wood fire at the brewery as part of brewing their limited release Stone Beer. It’s a beer that has evolved over the years and the 2013 brew is no exception.

But blink and you’ll miss this one… it’s only limited release! But we here at Kerbside were one of the first to get this in stock!

As a tribute to the brewers of the Middle Ages Stone & Wood brew this beer by adding wood fired stones to the kettle to rouse the boil and intensify the malt characters of the brew.

Long before the wizardry of steam was invented, brewers used stone and wood to brew their daily beer. They built a fire to heat large stones until they were hot enough to be added to their wooden vats to create a boiling brew. Apart from the obvious heating effects, the brewing stones also caramelised the brew to create subtle but rich toffee like flavours.

S&W have a perfectly good boiler, but it is those intense malt flavours from caramelising the wort that we have gone to great lengths to create. To add further complexity they then added the sticky cooled stones to the fermenter to let the yeast have a real treat feeding on the “wort candy” during fermentation.

Get in quick before you miss out.

Today’s Beer O’clock feature beer is 10,000 years in the making!

961 Beer began during the dark days of the July 2006 siege on Lebanon. Tired with the lack of quality beer in Lebanon, Mazen Hajjar and his friends started to brew beer in his very own kitchen. The first batches were brewed in 20 liter kettles. Granted that war and blockades are not the ideal conditions to start a company, alongside everyone telling them they were mad to even consider it, they went ahead with it anyway. They decided that brewing a good beer for a great country was what they wanted to do the most.

When 961 Beer officially began brewing they were one of the smallest breweries in the world, and the only microbrewery in the Middle East (and still are). Although 961 Beer now brews nearly 2 million liters per year, they still insist upon making beer using the very same principles: traditional techniques, quality ingredients and love.

This beer is an innovation inspired straight from the Lebanese spice markets, and filled with Lebanese tastes. The Lebanese Pale Ale is based on an English IPA. It uses Lebanese herbs such as za’atar (wild thyme), sumac, chamomile, sage, anise, and mint in the brewing process. This gives the beer its distinctly Lebanese flavour and fragrance.

Just in and icy cold for beer o’clock today is the Red Rocket Ale, a bastardised Scottish style red ale that traces its origins to Bear’s homebrew roots.

Winning a slew of Silver medals at many American beer festivals, the Red Rocket is a robust red ale, but still goes down smooth. This full bodied and hoppy brew finishes on the palate with sweet, caramel malt flavours.

Double Stout Black Ale (8.8%)

Just in and icy cold for beer o’clock today, is the big, bold, flavourful and complex – Double Stout Black Ale. An old-world style, done the Green Flash way.

Golden naked oats mashed with dark crystal and robust roasted malts create a luscious black brew with a satin smooth finish. Layering UK Target hops in the boil adds a pleasant, earthy complexity while higher fermentation temperatures enhance the overall flavor with fruity esters.

A smooth, solid American stout with a dark aroma. One to be savoured slowly.

Today’s beer o’clock feature is a malt-forward monster, highlighting the depths of malt flavour.

Narwhal Imperial Stout is inspired by the mysterious creature that thrives in the deepest fathoms of the frigid Arctic Ocean. Featuring incredible depth of malt flavor, rich with notes of espresso, baker’s cocoa, roasted grain and a light hint of smoke, Narwhal is a massive malt-forward monster.

Aggressive but refined with a velvety smooth body and decadent finish, Narwhal will age in the bottle for years to come.

Handle with care… and maybe share… this one packs a punch!

Rogue HazelNut Brown Nectar (6%)

Today’s beer o’clock feature is a nutty twist to a traditional European Brown Ale. Dark brown in color with a hazelnut aroma, a rich nutty flavour and a smooth malty finish; the Rogue Hazelnut Brown Nectar is a smooth operator… sure to be a great accompaniment to an afternoon drinking session.

Hazelnut Brown Nectar Ale is a blend of Great Western 2-row Pale, Munich, Hugh Baird Brown, Crystal 80 and Crystal 135, Carastan, and Beeston Pale Chocolate malts; hazelnut extract; Perle and Saaz hops.

It goes nicely with cheese and fruit, so why not grab one of our Cheese Boards for $30 to accompany this ale?

NEW IN! Today’s beer o’clock feature is a full-flavoured IPA from the folk at Nøgne ø … the brewery from Norway that refuses to compromise, committed to taste, committed to craft beer.

A rich, malty, and very bitter ale. Using hops from the American Pacific Coast because they add a beautiful aroma and provide a long, fruity, and spicy after-taste. Recommended serving temperature 10°C. Ideal with barbequed or smoked meat dishes.

Ingredients: Maris Otter, Munich, wheat and caramel malt, Chinook, Simcoe and Cascade hops, English ale yeast, and our local Grimstad water.

Today’s featured beer is by Red Hill Brewery a unique, independent microbrewery located amidst it’s own hop garden on the top of Red hill on the beautiful Mornington Peninsula, Australia.

Priding themselves on creating classic European beer styles that are eminently drinkable – their Golden Ale is just that. A pale and crisp light bodied ale, fruity with a restrained hoppy dryness created by their own Hallertauer & Tettnanger hop flowers. This beer is fermented at a cool temperature to create a crisp, clean finish and uses the best quality imported German Pilsner Malt. Red Hill also add a touch of Australian grown Wheat Malt to improve head retention on this beer, the result is a real treat: thick, smooth and creamy, like a naughty and nice after-dinner liqueur chocolate. What’s more, there are only 133 bottles in existence so it’s a rare treat too.

Come and treat yourself to one of these at beer o’clock soon!

Today’s featured beer is the bigger sister to the Temptress Chocolate Porter. Mature. Well Built. An experienced mix of vanilla beans, Dutch cocoa and locally roasted coffee beans. Dangerously inviting and not to be taken lightly.

A luscious warming mouthfeel, with coffee induced bitter notes contrasting with sweet chocolate and vanilla. Dangerously easy to drink, liqueuresque in flavour with a kahlua like finish. Like The Goddess Europa on her Bull, its’s easy to get carried away by this little dark number.

Taking the brewery’s Temptress as the start point – same malt bill and bitterness, same use of Dutch cocoa and vanilla beans – this originally took a journey to lands anew for the first Great Australian Beer SpecTAPular in February. As well as making it into an Imperial Mocha Porter (10% to the Temptress’ 6%), the brewers were keen to give it an Aussie twist so invested in some coffee from Eureka, grown around the Queensland / NSW border, that after much experimentation was added to the fermenters to add some coffee bitterness to the luxuriant vanilla-choc richness of its forefather (or mother). The result is a real treat: thick, smooth and creamy, like a naughty and nice after-dinner liqueur chocolate. What’s more, there are only 133 bottles in existence so it’s a rare treat too.

Today’s featured beer is funky, wild and tart. Some things don’t seem right but you want them anyway: that quasi-erotic feeling you get when Charlton Heston makes out with Zira the Chimp. Sure, she reluctantly says “all right, but you’re so damned ugly…” but you know she’s into it and as with all things a bit perverted, so are you.

Introducing Moon Dog’s Perverse Sexual Amalgam, a wild black ale to which has been added all manner of funky yeasts as well as, at some point in its existence inside some of their many barrels, tart cherry plums. The result is a deeply dark ale with a light white head that hints at a bright future for the boys. Sour and tart, for sure, but in a balanced, smooth manner that is remarkably moreish.

Reading this, you just want to try this sour black ale brewed with cherry plums, don’t you?
Hurry in for Beer O’clock then, as these won’t last long!!

You’ll have to get in quick for this one… today’s Beer O’Clock feature is the limited release single batch from Little Creatures Brewing, the Puffing Billy!!

So… what’s in a name? Through the heavy accents of beer loving Bavarians, who took a great liking of the dark malty beer being brewed in the German town of Einbeck, the name of the town was mistaken as the German word for a Billy Goat – “ein bock”. With their addition of smoked malt, Little Creatures couldn’t resist an ode to all those occasions where true meanings are lost in translation…. hence ‘Puffing Billy’

Little Creatures’ latest Single Batch beer is a lavishly hopped rich, dark lager with a gentle hint of smoked malt. Modelled off the traditional Bocks of Germany but with a natural twist, they thought they would also challenge traditional with the addition of smoked malt… A subtle hint of Beech wood smoked malt, rounds out a rich dark lager with lasting, peat like characters on the finish, while a full load of hops throughout the brew ensures that this is a beer that is true to our hop loving style.

Remember, stock is extremely limited on this one, so once it runs out… that’s it! So we highly recommend you see us soon for a beer o’clock session accompanied by a Puffing Billy.

Today’s beer o’clock is a treat… not trick, in celebration of Halloween! It’s got the grungiest and coolest label that reminds us of this scary holiday. Say hello to the Moon Dog Black Lung II… a Whisky barrel-aged smokey stout.

A most charming attraction: the sensual dance of provocative hops and spices entwined with a sumptuous and elegant malt body.

Mmmmmmmmmmm…… Black Lung with whisky barrels. We’re getting the black lung due to aforementioned ventilation issues, but this second incarnation of everyone’s favourite barrel aged smokey stout is bigger and bolder than before. Dark, mysterious, uber smooth, rich and luscious - these are adequate descriptors of the brewers.

Pours black with a large, lasting tan head. Nose shows smoke, whisky, a faint sour/funky notes and heavy peat.

Fire it up and smoke it at Beer O’clock this evening. Happy Halloween beer freaks!

Today’s beer o’clock feature will feature a few NEW beers from Holgate Brewhouse that have just arrived at Kerbside in time for Beer O’clock.

The Holgate Nut Brown Ale (5.3%), originally brewed in 2009 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Holgate Brewhouse - and a remembrance to the heady days of back-yard brewing! Delving into Paul Holgate’s old recipe book, they formulated this Anniversary Ale with roasted Australian macadamia nuts and six different malts to create a rich palate interweaved with an assertive hop character.

The Holgate Road Trip (5.5%), inspired by Paul and Natasha’s recent brewery and beer tour through the craft brewing “capital” of the world - the Pacific North West of the USA - this IPA is loaded up with multiple additions of Chinook, Centennial and Cascade hops from that region creating a piney and passionfruit hop fest with a hint of grapefruit and marmalade. Quickly becoming a beer enthusiastis favourite the Roap Trip is a very drinkable hop bonanza!

The Holgate Brick Kiln (5.0%). This wheat beer is in the style of the classic Bavarian wheat beers, it is presented mit Hefe (yeast left in suspension), hence the cloudy appearance.

The Brick Kiln Wheat, named after a local Woodend road and historical brick works, has reddish light brown colour to match it’s name. Darker than a regular hefeweizen but not a true Dunkel weizen - it balances between the two. Aromas of clove and banana are a result of the specialty German wheat beer yeast generating fruit esters from fermentation. There is a very low hop character, as demanded by the style, but the beer finishes with a clean bitterness.

A variety of beers to suit any taste… they’re ready and waiting for you now at Kerbside!

Today’s beer o’clock feature is right up the alley of every lager freak and beer geek! It’s the Coney Island Albino Python White Lager from Schmaltz Brewing Co., a small brewing company from the USA.

A most charming attraction: the sensual dance of provocative hops and spices entwined with a sumptuous and elegant malt body.

Brewed with sweet wheat-cereal malts with spicy ginger, notes of honey, herbs and spice; this inciting lager will have you enthralled and wanting to run away with the(ir) circus! Despite the wacky puns and somewhat scary psycho circus labels, this is a far from scary brew.

Taste the rapture. Surrender to temptation. Seduce and be seduced at Beer O’clock!

Today’s beer o’clock feature is of holy origin!

The origin: On the floor of a San Francisco Mission District loft, intimate friends squeeze luscious pomegranates by hand to brew the first 100 cases of the original HE’BREW beer by Schmaltz Brewing Company!

In Jewish tradition, pomegranates symbolize righteousness with seeds said to number 613, the total commandments in Torah. In Deut. 8:8, pomegranates, barley and wheat prove the bounty of the Land of Milk and Honey. The calyx atop the fruit inspired the original Jewish crown. One Persian hero of myth consumed a pomegranate and became invincible. Muhammad instructed: ‘Eat the pomegranate, for it purges the system of envy and hatred.’ Newlywed Greeks eager for a family crush one under-heel for fertility. Buddha cured a child-devouring demoness of her evil habit by instructing her to eat a pomegranate.

Brewed with the juice of over 10,000 luscious pomegranates, ORIGIN is a complex, rich and balanced Imperial Amber Ale with a truly unique character. The pomegranate juice is added during fermentation, leaving only the residual sugars, which serve to balance the hop bitterness.

Whether for knowledge or temptation, for virtue or valor, for art or for love, revel in the sumptuous pleasure of ORIGIN. To life…L’Chaim!

Two Birds Brewing was hatched in 2011, and is the culmination of a couple of friends who had a vision to balance the enjoyment of the finer things in life, with both work and play. They have set out in a small flock of two to make flavoursome, interesting and approachable beers and share their passion with others.

The heart and head of Two Birds Brewing are Jayne and Danielle. Ready to go out on a limb, they started a fresh new craft brewing operation that will draw on their acquired knowledge and passion. Armed with a quiver of quality craft beers and a bit of pluck, the Two Birds paired up, and flew the coop. Clip the wings of one or two of their fine craft beers today; as the saying goes around here,

The easy drinking Golden Ale won two Silver Medals at the 2012 International Beer Awards. A handcrafted, full flavoured ale that is true to its name. It pours golden in colour, is strikingly bright and exhibits grassy, spicy and citrus characters. This brew is crisp, refreshing and balanced. It is the perfect accompaniment to good food.

Two Birds Sunset Ale takes its inspiration from the Perth sunsets that the brewer used to enjoy while living on the west coast. This beer is a step up from their golden ale and is well balanced with malts and bitterness.

As they say, why settle for one? Grab yourself a few of these, they’ll go down nicely in this warm sunny weather at Beer O’clock!
